Carlsbad Caverns

Beneath the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico lies Carlsbad Caverns, a UNESCO site of vast decorated chambers hollowed from ancient limestone. The Big Room, one of the largest cave chambers in North America, is filled with towering stalagmites and delicate formations, and on summer evenings hundreds of thousands of bats spiral out of the natural entrance.

Background

The park lies in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico, with its entrance on US Highway 62/180 about 18 miles southwest of the town of Carlsbad. Visitors can walk in through the natural entrance or ride an elevator down from the visitor centre. The Big Room is almost 4,000 ft long, 625 ft wide and 255 ft high at its highest point, and it ranks as North America's largest chamber and 32nd in the world. The park was created in 1930 and became a World Heritage Site in 1995. Roughly two thirds of it is protected wilderness, and 410,778 people visited in 2025.

When to go

Year-round, since the cave stays cool and constant; summer evenings for the spectacular bat flight, which pauses in the cold months when the bats migrate. Reservations may be needed to enter.

Practical notes

It is remote in south-eastern New Mexico, a real drive from anywhere. Entry may need a timed reservation, so check ahead. The bat flight is seasonal and weather-dependent, and photography of it is not allowed to protect the bats.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is close over the Texas line; the town of Carlsbad is the base.
