Beneath the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico lies Carlsbad Caverns, a UNESCO site of vast decorated chambers hollowed from ancient limestone. The Big Room, one of the largest cave chambers in North America, is filled with towering stalagmites and delicate formations, and on summer evenings hundreds of thousands of bats spiral out of the natural entrance.

When to go
Year-round, since the cave stays cool and constant; summer evenings for the spectacular bat flight, which pauses in the cold months when the bats migrate. Reservations may be needed to enter.
Honest expectations
It is remote in south-eastern New Mexico, a real drive from anywhere. Entry may need a timed reservation, so check ahead. The bat flight is seasonal and weather-dependent, and photography of it is not allowed to protect the bats.
