Mount Klouto rises above Kpalimé to around seven hundred metres, forested and noticeably cooler than the plain, and it is known for butterflies: several hundred species have been recorded on the hill and local guides collect and mount them. Coffee and cocoa grow on the slopes. From the top the Ghanaian border country is visible and the air is clear enough to make the drive worth it. The hill sits directly on the Ghanaian border, and the frontier runs along part of the ridge.

When to go
July to October is the wet season when butterflies are most numerous. The dry season is clearer for views. The hill is cooler than the plain year round.
Honest expectations
Butterfly numbers vary considerably by season. Guides collect and sell mounted specimens, which some visitors will not want to support. Facilities are limited.
