Khao San Road

Khao San was a rice-trading street - the name means milled rice - until guesthouses opened here in the early 1980s and it became the arrival point for budget travellers in Southeast Asia, then the template for such streets everywhere, then a shorthand in books and films for a particular kind of travel. What it is now is more complicated. A refurbishment completed in 2020 repaved it and reorganised the vending, and the crowd has shifted substantially toward Thai visitors and short-stay tourists rather than the long-haul backpackers it was built for; the guesthouses are increasingly hostels and hotels. The street runs about four hundred metres and is loud, dense and commercial: bars with competing sound systems, stalls selling pad thai and insects to photograph, tailors, tattooists, massage shops and touts. Songkran in April turns it into the largest water fight in the country. It is a ten-minute walk from the Grand Palace.

When to go

November to February; evenings are when it operates. Songkran in mid-April is the most intense and the wettest. Daytime is quiet and unremarkable.

Honest expectations

Very loud with competing sound systems until late. Persistent touts and inflated prices. Scams around tuk-tuks, gems and tailors are common in the area. It is no longer the backpacker street of its reputation, which disappoints people looking for that.
