Khorog

Khorog is the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan and the main town of the Pamirs, squeezed into the narrow valley where the Gunt joins the Panj at around two thousand two hundred metres, so that it runs along the river for several kilometres and is barely a few streets wide. A park runs along the water, the University of Central Asia has a campus here, and the botanical garden above the town is among the highest in the world.

• The riverside park - the long green strip along the Gunt through the town.
• The valley position - a town strung along a river between steep walls.
• The botanical garden - one of the highest gardens in the world, above the town.
• The regional bazaar - the market serving the western Pamirs.

When to go

May to October is the season; the road in can close with snow and landslides in winter. Summer days are warm and nights cool. A GBAO permit is required.

Honest expectations

The roads in from any direction are long, rough and prone to landslides. A GBAO permit must be arranged before travelling. Power and internet are intermittent.
