Khorog

Khorog is the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan and the main town of the Pamirs, squeezed into the narrow valley where the Gunt joins the Panj at around two thousand two hundred metres, so that it runs along the river for several kilometres and is barely a few streets wide. A park runs along the water, the University of Central Asia has a campus here, and the botanical garden above the town is among the highest in the world.

Background

The town is also written Khorugh, or Kharagh in Shughni, and is the seat of the Shughnon District as well. It had an estimated 30,500 people in 2020. The deltas of the Shakhdara and the Ghunt mark its southern edge at Nivodak and its northern edge at Tem, and poplar trees dominate its greenery. Before 1896 the main town of the area was Kala-i Bar Panj, a little way downriver on the Afghan bank. The botanical garden was set up in 1940 to test how plants survive in a mountain climate, and more than 30,000 varieties have been tried there. A small airport has weekly flights to Dushanbe on Tajik Air's final AN-28 as of 2026.

When to go

May to October is the season; the road in can close with snow and landslides in winter. Summer days are warm and nights cool. A GBAO permit is required.

Practical notes

The roads in from any direction are long, rough and prone to landslides. A GBAO permit must be arranged before travelling. Power and internet are intermittent.
