Getting thereOn the Pamir Highway in western Gorno-Badakhshan; GBAO permit required
EntryGBAO permit required

Kalai-Khumb, also called Darvoz, sits where the Pamir Highway comes down to the Panj river, and it is the point where the two routes east divide: the river road south towards Khorog and the higher northern road over the passes. The town is strung along the valley with the river below and steep slopes above, and it is the standard overnight stop for anyone driving the highway. Guesthouses and a bazaar serve the traffic.

What you actually see

  • The route junction - where the river road and the northern pass road divide.
  • The Panj valley - the river running below the town between steep walls.
  • The highway stop - the standard overnight on the Dushanbe to Khorog run.
  • The bazaar - the market serving the town and passing traffic.

When to go

May to October is the season; the northern road over the passes closes with snow. Landslides close the river road regularly. A GBAO permit is required.

Honest expectations

Roads in every direction are rough and prone to landslides and closures. Facilities are basic guesthouses. A GBAO permit must be obtained before arriving.

Nearby

Khorog is southeast, and Dushanbe is west.
