Kalai-Khumb

Kalai-Khumb, also called Darvoz, sits where the Pamir Highway comes down to the Panj river, and it is the point where the two routes east divide: the river road south towards Khorog and the higher northern road over the passes. The town is strung along the valley with the river below and steep slopes above, and it is the standard overnight stop for anyone driving the highway. Guesthouses and a bazaar serve the traffic.

Background

The name translates as the fortress beside the Khumb river. In the 17th century the town was the capital of the small mirdom of Darwaz, and it is now the centre of Darvoz District in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. It sits at 1200 m, almost wholly enclosed by the Pamir Mountains, with a recorded population of 1909. By road it lies 168 km from Kulob, 368 km from Dushanbe and 235 km from Khorugh, which makes it a key overnight halt between Kulob and Khorugh, with several hotels for travellers.

When to go
