Vrang Buddhist Stupa
A terraced Buddhist monument above a Wakhan village, with caves cut into the slope around it.

Above the village of Vrang in the Wakhan a stepped stone structure rises in terraces on the hillside, generally interpreted as a Buddhist stupa from the period when this valley was on the route between India and Central Asia, with caves cut into the slope around it that were probably cells. The dating is not settled and some read the structure differently. A steep path climbs from the village and the valley opens out below.

When to go
May to October is the season. Mornings are coolest for the climb. A GBAO permit is required for the region.
Things to know
The interpretation as a stupa is probable rather than certain and there is no interpretation on site. The climb is steep and at altitude. Facilities in the village are minimal.
