The Wakhan Valley

The Wakhan Valley, a spectacular corridor where the Panj River marks the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich stretches of the Pamir region. Green oasis villages cling to the Tajik bank, terraced with fields, while just across the water rise the snow-capped peaks of the Afghan Hindu Kush and the remote villages of the Afghan Wakhan. Steeped in Silk Road history, the valley is dotted with ancient stone fortresses like Yamchun, Buddhist and Zoroastrian remains, shrines and natural hot springs, all in a setting of stark, majestic grandeur.

When to go

June to September, the mountain summer, when the high roads are open, the villages green and the weather at its best; even then, mornings and nights are cold at altitude. The valley is part of the wider Pamir journey and requires the GBAO permit and, ideally, a guide and sturdy vehicle.

What to expect

The valley is safe and welcoming on the Tajik side, but the Afghan side across the river should only be viewed, not visited. For history, culture and stunning border scenery, though, the Wakhan is extraordinary.
