The Sapa Rice Terraces

The mountains around Sapa in Vietnam's far northwest are among the most spectacular landscapes in the country, where generations of hill-tribe farmers have carved cascading emerald rice terraces into the steep, misty valleys. When to go

September to October, when the terraces turn golden before the harvest, and the green of the growing season from around May to August, are the most beautiful; winter is cold and misty. The mist that gives Sapa its magic can also hide the views.

Sapa town itself has become overdeveloped and touristy, so the real reward is trekking out to the villages and terraces. Mist and cloud often shroud the valleys, hiding the views, and winters are genuinely cold. Village tourism raises questions, so choose respectful, community-based treks and homestays.
