Fansipan Cable Car

Fansipan rises above Sapa in the Hoang Lien range, and reaching it used to mean a two day trek. Since the cable car opened, the ride from the Muong Hoa station takes roughly fifteen minutes and covers most of the height, crossing the valley with the terraced floor below before rising into cloud along the ridge. From the upper station a funicular or several hundred steps lead to the summit marker at 3,143 metres, which sits inside a complex of pagodas, bronze statues and viewing platforms built into the slope. On a clear day the view runs across the range and down into the valley; in cloud, which is common, you see the buildings immediately around you and little else.

What you actually see

• The valley crossing - the first stretch of the line over Muong Hoa valley and its terraces.
• The summit marker - the pyramid at the top, reached by steps or the short funicular.
• The ridge complex - pagodas, bronze statues and platforms built along the upper slope.
• The cloud line - the point where the cabin enters mist, often less than halfway up.

When to go

September to November has the clearest air and the best chance of an actual view; winter brings cold, occasional frost and the rare snow that draws domestic crowds. Ride early, ideally on the first cabins, because cloud usually builds by late morning. Weekends and Vietnamese holidays produce long queues at both the base station and the funicular.

Honest expectations

The summit has been comprehensively built over, and anyone expecting a wild mountain top finds concrete stairs, souvenir counters and loudspeakers instead. Views are a lottery: many days end in white fog with nothing visible at all. Tickets are among the more expensive attractions in the country, with the funicular charged on top. It is cold and windy up there even when Sapa is warm.
