Garm Chashma

South of Khorog, a side valley climbs to one of the Pamirs' small wonders: Garm Chashma, where hot mineral water has built a hillside of white travertine - petrified cascades, scalloped pools and stalactite lips like a frozen waterfall - and been treasured for its healing reputation since long before anyone wrote about it. Bathers soak in the hot pools by turns (hours divide men and women), snow peaks stand at the valley head, and a modest sanatorium serves those who come for weeks of the cure rather than an afternoon. On the way, the Ishkashim road runs the Panj river with Afghanistan's villages across the water - the Wakhan's great scenery beginning.

When to go

Bathing is communal, sex-segregated by schedule and done modestly - check the current hours and follow local practice. Facilities are simple: changing sheds, a teahouse, the sanatorium's Soviet-era bones. The site is compact; it earns its half day mostly through the valley drive that delivers you there. GBAO permit applies as everywhere in the region.
