The Pamir Botanical Garden was founded in 1940 on a terrace above Khorog at around two thousand three hundred metres, which puts it among the highest botanical gardens in the world, and its purpose was practical: to test which trees and crops could be made to grow at Pamir altitudes. It holds several thousand species and varieties, many introduced from other mountain regions, and the terraces give a view down the valley over the town.

What you actually see

  • The altitude - among the highest botanical gardens anywhere, at around 2300 metres.
  • The introduced collections - trees and crops tested for growth at Pamir altitudes.
  • The terraces - the stepped planting above the valley.
  • The valley view - Khorog and the rivers below the garden.

When to go

May to September is when the garden is at its best. Winter closes most of it. Mornings are the coolest for the climb.

Honest expectations

Maintenance is uneven and parts of the collection are neglected. Labelling is limited and mostly in Russian. The walk up from the town is steep.

Nearby

Khorog is below, and the Wakhan valley is southeast.
