The Romit gorge runs east from Dushanbe up the Kofarnihon river, and its slopes hold walnut, maple and juniper woodland that has been protected as a nature reserve since 1959, which makes it one of the older protected areas in the country. It is the nearest real mountain country to the capital and is used accordingly at weekends, with sanatoria and picnic places along the valley floor and paths climbing into the woods.

What you actually see

  • The walnut and maple woods - the deciduous forest on the gorge slopes.
  • The nature reserve - protected since 1959, one of the country's oldest.
  • The river - the Kofarnihon running down the valley floor.
  • The weekend picnic places - the sites used by Dushanbe families.

When to go

April to October is the season; autumn colour in the walnut woods is good. Weekends bring crowds from Dushanbe. Winter closes the upper valley.

Honest expectations

Weekend crowds and litter along the valley floor are a real problem. The reserve is poorly resourced and enforcement is limited. Facilities are dated sanatoria.

Nearby

Dushanbe is west, and Varzob Gorge is northwest.
