Tscheppaschlucht

The Loiblbach cuts the Tscheppaschlucht into limestone on the way down from the Loibl pass to the Rosental, and a route was opened through it in 1904: bridges, stairs and short ladder sections following the water for a couple of kilometres past pools, a fall called the Tschaukofall and the Teufelsbrücke, a bridge in a narrow slot where the local story has the devil involved in the building. The gorge is unusually varied - narrow slots opening into wider wooded sections - and there is a hanging bridge across the deepest part. It is the standard family outing from Klagenfurt and takes about two hours with the return along the forest path. The Meerauge, a small intensely blue pool nearby, is often visited on the same trip.

What you actually see

May to October; closed in winter. Half a day.

Honest expectations

Closed in winter and after storm damage. Boards and rock are slippery throughout. It is a continuous climb of a couple of hundred metres. Parking at the lower entrance fills at weekends.
