Church of Saint Simeon Stylites

Simeon the Stylite lived for decades on top of a pillar on this hill, and after his death in 459 the largest church in the world of its time was built around the pillar: four basilicas meeting at an octagon, with the column stump at the centre, worn down over centuries by pilgrims taking fragments. The complex, Qalaat Semaan, crowned a pilgrimage town and stands within the UNESCO Ancient Villages landscape. The church was damaged in the 2010s and the pillar base was toppled, but the great arches and facades still stand on their hill.

When to go

March to May and October to November are mild. Spring greens the limestone hills. Summer is hot on the exposed hilltop.

Honest expectations

The site was damaged in the 2010s and conservation is ongoing; some areas are off limits. Access arrangements change and need local checking. Facilities are minimal.
