Church of Saint Simeon Stylites

Simeon the Stylite lived for decades on top of a pillar on this hill, and after his death in 459 the largest church in the world of its time was built around the pillar: four basilicas meeting at an octagon, with the column stump at the centre, worn down over centuries by pilgrims taking fragments. The complex, Qalaat Semaan, crowned a pilgrimage town and stands within the UNESCO Ancient Villages landscape. The church was damaged in the 2010s and the pillar base was toppled, but the great arches and facades still stand on their hill.

Background

Simeon was born in 390 AD in a village of the Amanus mountains and entered a monastery at 16. He later settled on a small platform on top of a 3-meter column, which was raised over time to 18 meters, and he died in AD 459 at about 69. Crowds of pilgrims led to construction in 473 AD; the church was consecrated in 475 AD and completed in 490, covering over 5,000 square meters, and no Christian church exceeded it until Hagia Sophia was finished in 537. It formed the core of a walled monastic complex with two smaller churches and pilgrim hostels, on a site first called Telanissos. Another of its names is Deir Semaan, the Monastery of Simeon.
