Ulriksdal Palace

Ulriksdal began as Jakob De la Gardie's manor in the 1640s and passed to the crown, and it kept being altered by whoever lived in it, so the interiors run from seventeenth-century state rooms to the apartments Gustaf VI Adolf used into the 1970s. Two things in the park are worth as much as the house: the orangery, rebuilt in the early eighteenth century to Tessin the Younger's design and now holding Nationalmuseum's Swedish sculpture from the 1700s to the 1900s, and Confidencen, the court theatre of 1753, restored in the 1980s and running a summer opera season. The park runs down to the Edsviken inlet and is part of the Royal National City Park, open all year.

Good to know

The palace itself opens only in summer and on limited days. Confidencen performances need booking well ahead. Public transport involves a bus. Some rooms are shown by guided tour only.
