Millesgarden

Carl Milles and Olga Granner bought the site in 1906 and spent decades cutting terraces into the granite slope above Varta harbour, laying out a garden in Italian manner with columns, fountains and pools, and setting Milles's own bronzes on high plinths so they stand against the sky and the water rather than against a wall - which is how he wanted them read. Milles worked in the United States for much of his later career and much of what is here are casts of works installed there. The house is open with its studio and an antique collection, and a gallery added later takes temporary exhibitions. The couple gave the whole thing to the public in 1936.

When to go

May to September for the garden at its best; the gallery is open all year. Two hours.

Honest expectations

The garden is the point, so winter visits lose most of it. Terraces mean steps and slopes throughout. Many works are casts rather than unique pieces. The cafe is small.
