Nek Chand was a roads inspector who began, around 1957, collecting broken bangles, tiles, sockets, sanitary ware and rubble from the villages demolished to build Chandigarh, and assembling them into figures in a forest gorge on government land, working at night without permission. It was discovered in 1975, by which time it covered several acres and was illegal; rather than demolish it the authorities gave him a salary and workers. It now covers around forty acres, with courtyards of hundreds of figures in mosaic of broken ceramic, waterfalls, arched corridors and a swing plaza, entered through low doorways that force visitors to stoop.

What you actually see

  • The mosaic figures - hundreds of people and animals in broken ceramic.
  • The bangle sculptures - forms built from discarded glass bangles.
  • The low doorways - narrow entrances that make visitors stoop between courts.
  • The waterfall and swings - the water feature and the arched swing plaza.

When to go

October to March for comfortable weather; the garden is open air with limited shade. Mornings are quieter. Weekends and holidays bring heavy crowds through the narrow passages.

Honest expectations

Passages are narrow and crowds create bottlenecks. Some sections have deteriorated and repairs are uneven since Nek Chand's death in 2015. Little interpretation is provided on site.

Nearby

Sukhna Lake lies east; the Capitol Complex is north.
