Hallwyl Museum

Wilhelmina von Hallwyl had this house built between 1893 and 1898 with central heating, electricity, telephones and bathrooms that were unusual for the decade, then filled it with paintings, arms, porcelain, silver and furniture and spent decades cataloguing the lot into seventy-eight printed volumes. She gave the house and everything in it to the state in 1920 on the condition that nothing be moved, so the rooms are not a reconstruction: they are the actual arrangement, including the kitchen, the billiard room and the servants' floors. It opened as a museum in 1938, eight years after her death. The courtyard is used for summer concerts.

What to expect

Much of the house is seen on guided tours only, and English tours are limited. It is dense and dark, and the volume of objects tires people. Photography rules are strict. It is small and busy at weekends.
