Salen is not one hill but several linked areas - Lindvallen, Hogfjallet, Tandadalen, Hundfjallet and Klappen among them - spread along a line of fells above the treeline in western Dalarna, and taken together they make the largest lift-served ski area in the country. The terrain is gentle and wide with short vertical, which suits families and beginners rather than steep skiers; there is extensive cross-country trail network alongside. The Vasaloppet starts here each March. An airport opened at Salen in 2019 to bring people in directly. Out of season the fells are used for hiking and mountain biking, though the resorts are much quieter.

Honest expectations
Vertical drop is small and steep skiers find it limited. Sport holiday weeks in February and March fill everything and raise prices. Daylight is short in midwinter. Summer sees most facilities closed.
