Idre Fjall sits on an open fell at around nine hundred metres in the far north of Dalarna, with slopes on several aspects and accommodation built up the hillside rather than in a village below. It is family-oriented, with wide runs and a long season by Swedish standards because of the altitude and the northerly position. Summer brings hiking and mountain biking, and the surrounding country is genuinely remote: Idre sameby, the southernmost Sami reindeer herding community in Sweden, works this district, and Fulufjallet national park with its waterfall is a short drive west. Grovelsjon and the Norwegian border are north.

What you actually see

  • An open fell at about nine hundred metres - slopes on several aspects.
  • A long season for Sweden - altitude and latitude together.
  • Summer hiking and biking - the same ground without snow.
  • Idre sameby around it - the southernmost reindeer district.

When to go

December to April, or June to September. Several days.

Honest expectations

Accommodation is resort apartments rather than a village with life of its own. February and March holiday weeks are full and expensive. It is a long drive from anywhere. Summer facilities are much reduced.

Nearby

Fulufjallet and Njupeskar are west; Grovelsjon is north.
