Lilla Torg

Lilla Torg was cut out of a corner of the big square in 1591 to give the town a second market, and the houses round it are the oldest group left in central Malmo - half-timbered, several from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with the Hedmanska garden opening off one side into a courtyard of workshops. Trading moved out long ago and the square is now almost entirely restaurants and bars, with awnings and heaters covering most of the cobbles from spring onwards. Saluhallen, the market hall in the old goods depot, is a minute away and is where to eat if the terrace prices put you off.

May to September for the terraces. An hour.

Before you go

It is a drinking square now - prices are high and it is loud in the evening. Awnings and furniture hide much of the architecture. Winter empties it. Saluhallen nearby is better value.
