Landsort Lighthouse

There has been a light on the southern point of Oja since the mid-seventeenth century and the present round stone tower dates from 1689, which makes it the oldest lighthouse still standing in Sweden. The island is long and narrow, treeless at the south end and grazed, with a small settlement of pilot and lighthouse houses, home to about thirty people, and a bird station that rings migrants - the position at the outer edge of the archipelago puts it directly under the flyway. There are no cars. Most people come for the day from Ankarudden, and a few stay in the guest rooms.

Before you go

Getting there takes most of a morning and the ferry is weather dependent. The island is exposed with little shelter. Services are minimal - one restaurant, seasonal. Tower access is not always available.
