Tyreso Palace
A seventeenth-century palace south of Stockholm, restyled in 1890s antiquarian taste and left that way.

Gabriel Oxenstierna built Tyreso in the 1630s between two lakes, and the building kept its shape but not its insides: Claes Lagergren bought it in 1892 and rebuilt the interiors in the taste of the time, a romantic reconstruction of what a seventeenth-century palace should look like, with a chapel added in Roman style. That work is now itself the historic layer, and the house is shown as Lagergren left it. The Nordiska museet has run it since his death in 1930. The park has an English garden, a rose garden and a cafe in the old orangery, and paths run on into the Tyresta forest and national park beyond.

May to September for the house; the park is open longer. Two to three hours.
What to expect
The interior is seen only on a guided tour, and English tours are few. The season is short. It is not on the metro. The gardens are modest by palace standards.
