Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde

Prince Eugen, the youngest son of Oscar II, was a landscape painter of real standing rather than a royal amateur, and he had Ferdinand Boberg build this house on the Djurgarden headland in 1905, adding a gallery in 1913 as the collection grew. He left everything to the state at his death in 1947. The hang covers his own work - broad, quiet Swedish landscapes, often at dusk - alongside the Nordic contemporaries he bought, and temporary exhibitions run through the year. The park slopes to the water with sculpture set about it, including work by Milles and Rodin, and an old windmill stands on the highest point.

Good to know

It is at the far end of Djurgarden, which is a walk or a wait for the tram. Closed Mondays. The house interiors are limited in extent. Popular exhibitions crowd small rooms.
