Landskrona Citadel
A moated sixteenth-century Danish fortress with one of Sweden's oldest allotment gardens on its old ramparts.

Christian III built the citadel from 1549 to hold the Skane coast for Denmark, a square of ranges inside a double moat with bastions, and it was extended repeatedly afterwards. It was never seriously stormed; it became a fortress prison in the early eighteenth century and served only as a prison from 1822 until 1940. What surrounds it now is unexpected: the outer fortification zone, which could not be built on, is filled with allotment gardens, among the oldest in Sweden, their huts and original gardens lining the moats. The citadel interior is shown on tours.

What to expect
Interiors need a booked tour, mostly in Swedish. Buildings are plain and partly used for storage. The allotments are private plots - you walk the lanes, not the gardens. Landskrona is a quiet town.
