Karnan
A square brick keep on the ridge above Helsingborg, all that survives of the Danish castle that watched the Oresund.

Karnan is a Danish keep of the early fifteenth century, thirty-five metres of brick on a stone base, and it stood at the centre of a castle that controlled the narrowest crossing of the Oresund, where the strait is about four kilometres wide and ships could be watched or taxed. Sweden took Skane in 1658 and the fortifications were demolished in 1679; the tower was spared, went to ruin, and was restored in the 1890s, when the battlements and roof were added. You climb an internal stair past a chapel and vaulted rooms to a platform with the sound, Helsingor and the Danish coast in front of you.

Honest expectations
The stair is narrow, steep and unsuited to anyone unsteady. The interior is largely empty. Only the tower survives of the castle. It closes in bad weather.
