The Royal Alcazar of Seville is a breathtaking palace of intricate Mudejar art, built by Christian kings using Moorish craftsmen, a dreamlike sequence of tiled courtyards, carved stucco, coffered ceilings and sunken gardens of palms, fountains and orange trees. The oldest royal palace still in use in Europe and a UNESCO jewel, it is as magical as the Alhambra and famous from screen.

What you actually see

  • The Courtyard of the Maidens - the exquisite tiled and stuccoed central court.
  • The Hall of Ambassadors - the domed golden throne room.
  • The gardens - the sunken gardens of palms, fountains and orange trees.
  • The tilework - the dazzling azulejo tiles throughout.

When to go

Spring and autumn for mild weather and blooming gardens; summer is very hot, though the gardens offer shade. Book a timed ticket ahead, as it is extremely popular.

Honest expectations

It is extremely popular and famous from film and television, so book a timed ticket ahead and expect crowds. It is a working royal residence, so the upper rooms may be restricted. Paired with the cathedral next door, it makes a full, rich morning.

Nearby

Seville Cathedral and the Giralda are beside it; the Santa Cruz quarter surrounds it.
