Roque de los Muchachos Observatory

The Roque de los Muchachos is the highest point of La Palma at 2,426 metres, on the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente, and it holds one of the best astronomical sites in the northern hemisphere: the trade wind inversion puts a stable cloud layer below the summit, the air above is exceptionally steady, and a 1988 law protects the sky from light pollution across the island. More than a dozen telescopes from around twenty countries operate there, including the Gran Telescopio Canarias, whose 10.4-metre segmented mirror makes it among the largest single-aperture optical telescopes in the world. Guided daytime visits to some instruments are available by booking. The road up climbs through pine forest to bare volcanic rock above the clouds.

When to go

April to October, when the road is reliably open; snow and ice close it in winter. Guided telescope visits must be booked in advance with limited places. Night access to the summit is restricted to protect observations.

Honest expectations

Telescope interiors are seen only on booked guided tours in daytime, and the observatory is not a public stargazing site; night visits are controlled. The road climbs to 2,400 metres, where altitude and cold affect visitors. Cloud below can also rise over the summit.
