Blackrock Castle Observatory

A castle has stood on this point since 1582, built by Cork's citizens to guard the river approach against pirates; it burned twice and the present building is largely an 1829 rebuild. In 2007 it reopened as an observatory and science centre run with Munster Technological University - not a museum about astronomy but a working facility, with researchers on site, a robotic optical telescope and a radio telescope in the courtyard used for real observation and for schools programmes. The public exhibition, Cosmos at the Castle, covers the search for life beyond Earth and the physics behind it, with interactive stations and a planetarium-style theatre. The setting on the river is the other half of the appeal, with a restaurant in the castle and the Marina walk running out from the city along the water. It is aimed substantially at families and school groups, which shapes the tone of the exhibition.

Aimed largely at families and school groups. Actual telescope observing is limited to occasional events and needs clear skies - the day visit is exhibition-based. Ticketed, with the restaurant separate.
