Cork City Gaol

The gaol opened in 1824, designed by the Pain brothers in a castellated Gothic style that makes it look far more like a castle than a prison from outside - a deliberate civic statement. Inside it was a standard nineteenth-century separate-system prison of individual cells. From 1878 it held only women, and the records are the substance of the visit: the great majority were imprisoned for small thefts driven by destitution, drunkenness or vagrancy, many of them repeatedly, and the museum foregrounds those cases rather than notorious criminals. It later held republican prisoners including Constance Markievicz. After closing in 1923 it housed Cork's first radio station, 6CK, and a small radio museum occupies the governor's house. The presentation uses wax figures and sound in furnished cells, which is dated but effective, and the hill walk up from the city is steeper than it looks on a map.

When to go

Any season; indoors. Reduced hours in winter. Two hours covers the gaol and the radio museum. The walk up from the city takes twenty minutes and is steep.

Honest expectations

The wax-figure presentation is dated. The walk from the city centre is uphill; there is limited parking. The subject matter - destitute women imprisoned repeatedly - is grim and directly presented.
