Crawford Art Gallery
Cork's free public gallery in an eighteenth-century custom house, holding plaster casts sent from Rome in 1818.

The building was Cork's custom house, put up in 1724, and became an art school and then a gallery. Its founding collection is unusual: in 1818 Pope Pius VII presented a set of plaster casts of classical sculpture to the Prince Regent in thanks for Britain's part in recovering artworks looted by Napoleon, and they were passed to Cork. Antonio Canova supervised their making. Generations of Cork art students drew from them, including Daniel Maclise and, much later, the sculptors of the Cork school, and they remain the gallery's most distinctive holding. The permanent collection covers Irish art from the eighteenth century onward - Jack B Yeats, Mainie Jellett, Sean Keating, Harry Clarke's stained glass and drawings - alongside a contemporary programme. Entry is free. The gallery closed for major redevelopment and has run a reduced or offsite programme during the works, so check what is open before travelling.
History
The gallery occupies the Cork Customs House of 1724, which became home to the Royal Cork Institution in the 1830s; the Institution helped open the Cork School of Design here in 1850, and after the Crawford family, local landowners and brewers, paid for its extension in the early 1880s it was renamed the Crawford School of Art in 1885 (Wikipedia, Crawford Art Gallery).
