The cable car at Tongyeong climbs Mireuksan from the edge of town, a ride of around ten minutes over forest to a station below the summit, from where wooden stairs and boardwalks lead up to viewing platforms on the ridge. What you get at the top is the Hallyeosudo: dozens of green islands scattered across a sheltered strait, with ferries and fishing boats drawing lines between them and the mainland coast folding away to the west. Tongyeong itself is a working port known for its seafood and for the painted lane on the hillside above the harbour, so the cable car fits into a day rather than filling one. A luge track runs down the hill beside the lower station.

What you actually see

  • The island view - the Hallyeosudo strait and its scattered islands from the ridge.
  • The ridge boardwalks - the stairs and platforms from the upper station to the summit.
  • The ride itself - the ten-minute climb over forest from the valley floor.
  • Tongyeong harbour - the working port and painted hillside lane below.

When to go

Spring and autumn for clear air; summer haze frequently reduces the islands to grey outlines, which defeats the purpose. Go in the morning before the cloud builds. The cable car stops in high wind, sometimes for a full day, and queues run long on weekends and holidays, so buy the ticket early and check the wind forecast.

Honest expectations

High wind closes it without notice, and there is no warning until you arrive. Weekend and holiday queues at the lower station can pass an hour each way. From the upper station it is still a climb of steps and boardwalk to the best viewpoints, which surprises people who assumed the lift did all the work. Hazy days give a flat, colourless view.

Nearby

The Dongpirang painted lane, the harbour fish market and ferries to the nearby islands are all in Tongyeong.
