Andong Hahoe Folk Village

Hahoe, near the city of Andong, is one of the best-preserved traditional clan villages in Korea and part of a World Heritage listing, and it is a real living community rather than a museum, still home to descendants of the Ryu clan who founded it centuries ago. Cradled in a loop of the river, its name meaning roughly enveloped by water, it lays out the tiled-roof houses of the aristocratic yangban families and the thatched cottages of commoners in the historic pattern, amid pine groves and paddies, under the gaze of a cliff across the river. Andong is a heartland of Korean Confucian tradition, and the village preserves its rituals, architecture and, most famously, the Hahoe byeolsin gut, a mask dance drama of satire and shamanic ritual performed with distinctive carved wooden masks. It offers a rare, grounded look at old rural Korea.

History

The Ryu clan of Pungsan founded the village in the 15th century, under the Joseon dynasty, and it has been a single-clan community ever since; its name joins ha, river, and hoe, turning back, for the bend of the river around it. Two branches of the clan, the Gyeomampa and the Seoaepa, the latter descended from Yu Sŏngnyong, prime minister under King Seonjo, once kept to their own manors and sides of the village, though today both live throughout it, and the Yongmogak shrine keeps Yu Sŏngnyong's books, among them the Jingbirok, his record of the Imjin War and a National Treasure. The village has kept Joseon-era tiled houses of the aristocracy and thatched servants' homes, the Byeolsin-gut shamanist rite with its Hahoe masks and the Jeulbul Nori fireworks under Buyongdae Cliff, and in 2010 it became a World Heritage Site with Yangdong Folk Village (Wikipedia, Hahoe Folk Village).

When to go

Spring and autumn are loveliest and most comfortable; the mask dance is performed on a regular schedule, often weekends and more frequently in season, so check times. The Andong Mask Dance Festival in autumn is a highlight. It is a living village, so early or late in the day is quieter.

Good to know

It is a genuine residential village, so respect the privacy of the families who live there and do not enter homes uninvited or peer through windows. It is a fair way from Seoul, best reached via Andong, and the village itself is small, a half-day rather than a full one. The mask dance runs only at set times, so timing your visit around it matters to see the highlight.
