Bohemian Garnet

The Czech garnet is a pyrope, a dark blood-red stone washed out of volcanic gravels in the uplands around Trebenice and Podsedice. The stones are small, rarely larger than a pea, which is why the traditional settings crowd dozens or hundreds of them together in gold or gilded alloy, a style that peaked in the nineteenth century and still defines what people picture when they hear the name. The Museum of Czech Garnet at Trebenice shows historic pieces and the geology behind them. Turnov, the country's jewellery town, has a museum and a long-running stone cutting school. The deposits are licensed and worked commercially, so certificates matter.

When to go

Year round and entirely indoors, so it works as a wet-weather plan. Small-town museums keep shorter winter hours and often shut for an hour at lunch and on Mondays, so check before travelling. Workshop visits and cutting demonstrations need arranging in advance, and are easier on weekdays.

Honest expectations

Darker garnets from India and Africa look similar and are sold as Czech in tourist shops, so buy only with paperwork and expect firm sales pressure in Prague. Prices per stone are high for how small they are, and the dense Victorian style is not to everyone's taste. You cannot collect stones yourself; the deposits are protected. Both museums are small and quickly seen.
