The City of San Marino

April to October, for the mildest weather and best views; the town is busiest with day-trippers in summer, so mornings, evenings or the shoulder seasons are calmer and more atmospheric. The changing of the guard and occasional medieval festivals add colour, and the old town is lovely and quiet once the day crowds leave.

San Marino's popularity as a day trip means its central streets are heavily geared to tourism, lined with souvenir and duty-free shops selling everything from replica weapons to trinkets, which can feel kitschy; it is also steep to walk.
