Montale Tower

Montale is the third and smallest of the towers on Monte Titano, built in the fourteenth century at the southern end of the ridge as a lookout facing the rival Malatesta lands, and unlike the other two it has never been opened to visitors: it is a single pentagonal tower with the only door some eight metres up and a dungeon cut into the rock below. The ridge path runs to it through woodland.

What you actually see

• The closed tower - the one of the three never opened to the public.
• The high door - the only entrance some eight metres above the ground.
• The ridge path - the walk out to it through woodland.
• The lookout position - the southern end facing the old rival lands.

When to go

April to October is the mild season. The tower is exterior only in any season. The walk out is quiet compared with the other two.

Honest expectations

The interior is closed and has always been; the visit is the exterior and the walk. It is smaller and less dramatic than Guaita and Cesta. The path can be muddy.
