Fiorentino

Fiorentino lies south of Monte Titano, one of the nine castelli, where the medieval castle of Fiorentino once guarded the southern approach to the republic. The parish church and a few streets make up the settlement. The country around is farmland and the view runs south into the Montefeltro hills. The castle belonged to the Counts of Carpegna until 1440 and then briefly to the Malatesta, before San Marino took it in 1463 and dismantled its defences. The castello now holds a few thousand people spread across several hamlets.

History

Fiorentino first appears in 1069 among lands given to Saint Peter Damian for the new monastery of San Gregorio in Conca. The Counts of Carpegna held its castle until 1440 and then briefly the Malatesta, and in 1463 it passed to San Marino, which dismantled its defences; in 1913 the aviator Gianni Widmer landed on the Monte Carlo plateau here after the first flight over San Marino (Italian Wikipedia, Fiorentino (San Marino)).

When to go

April to October is the mild season. The village is quiet year round. Its festa falls in the summer.

What to expect

Little of the castle shows and there is no interpretation. The village is small and ordinary. Facilities are minimal.
