Domagnano

Domagnano sits on the ridge north of Monte Titano, one of the nine castelli, and it is known for the Domagnano Treasure: a hoard of Ostrogothic gold jewellery from around the fifth century found here in 1893, including an eagle brooch that became one of the best known pieces of migration-period metalwork. The hoard was dispersed to museums abroad, and the State Museum in San Marino shows reconstructions of it.

History

The area has been settled since Roman times and was once called Montelupo, the mountain of wolves, and its coat of arms shows a white wolf. In 1893 a 5th-century treasure of gold jewellery was found at the Lagucci farm and sold off by dealers as Italian, until in 1973 the historian Volker Bierbrauer traced it back here; the territory passed to San Marino in 1463 (Wikipedia, Domagnano).

April to October is the mild season. The village is quiet year round. Its festa falls in the summer.

None of the treasure is in San Marino; the pieces are in museums in Germany, the United States and elsewhere. The village itself is small and ordinary. There is little arranged for visitors.
