Kalam Valley

Kalam sits at around 2,000 metres where the Swat river gathers its headwaters, and it has grown from a village into the busiest mountain resort in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the place Punjabi and Peshawari families drive to when the plains hit forty-five degrees. The town itself is a strip of hotels and bazaars along the river, pleasant in parts and overbuilt in others, badly hit by the 2022 floods and substantially rebuilt since. The reasons to come lie above it: the Ushu forest of deodar cedars, the braided upper river running over white stones, and the jeep roads to Mahodand lake and the side valleys. Behind the ridges stands Falak Sar, the highest peak in Swat. The valley's season is short and intense, with July and August bringing heavy crowds and the shoulder months offering the same scenery with room to breathe.

When to go

May, June, September and October are the sweet spots; July and August are peak season with traffic jams on the valley road and full hotels. Winter brings snow and most of the town closes. Floods have repeatedly damaged the road, so conditions are worth checking.

Honest expectations

Kalam town is commercial and noisy in season, and the riverfront construction is unregulated; the beauty starts where the town ends. The road from Mingora is slow and sections remain rough since the floods. Hotel quality varies wildly for the price. Expect crowds at every accessible beauty spot in peak weeks.
