Butkara Stupa

Butkara I, excavated by an Italian mission from the 1950s onward, is the most important Buddhist site in the Swat valley, which ancient sources knew as Uddiyana and remembered as a heartland of early Buddhism. The main stupa was founded, according to the excavators, in the Mauryan period, possibly under Ashoka in the third century BC, and was then enlarged five times over the following centuries, each rebuilding encasing the last like shells. Around it stand the bases of more than two hundred votive stupas and columns, donated by pilgrims over a millennium, along with traces of the green schist sculpture that made Gandharan Swat famous; the best pieces are in the Swat Museum nearby and in Italian collections. The site sits unassumingly at the edge of Mingora's sprawl, green and quiet behind its fence, and pairs naturally with the museum for making sense of what stood here.

When to go

October to April for comfortable temperatures; summer visits are best early in the morning. The site is open in daylight hours and rarely busy. Combine with the museum, which keeps standard hours and closes on some public holidays.

Honest expectations

The sculpture that made the site famous is in museums, so what remains on the ground is masonry: evocative for anyone interested in Buddhist history, modest for anyone expecting standing architecture. Interpretation on site is thin. The surrounding urban edge intrudes on the setting. An hour is usually enough.
