Garam Chashma

Garam Chashma means hot spring, and the village exists because of them: sulphurous water emerges at temperatures too high to enter directly and is piped into a set of bathhouses where it is mixed with cold river water to a bearable heat. People come from across the district for the baths, which have a long-standing reputation for skin and joint complaints, and the setting adds to the appeal, with the Lutkoh river running through a narrow valley of terraced fields and poplars under bare mountains. The village is also the last settlement of any size before the mountains rise towards the passes, and it holds a small bazaar. Facilities are simple: concrete bathing rooms, some private and some communal, with separate arrangements for men and women, and a few guesthouses in the village for those who want to stay.

Honest expectations

The bathhouses are functional rather than pleasant, with variable cleanliness and no spa atmosphere at all. Facilities for women are limited and separate. The road from Chitral is rough and takes longer than the distance suggests. The sulphur smell is strong throughout the village.
