Hakone Onsen Towns

Hakone is where Tokyo goes to exhale: a volcanic mountain district ninety minutes from the capital, laced with hot-spring towns where ryokan inns pipe mineral water into cypress tubs and open-air rotenburo baths with maple or valley views. The classic circuit is half the fun - a switchback railway climbs the gorge, a ropeway sails over Owakudani's steaming volcanic valley where eggs boiled black in the springs are the traditional snack, and a decidedly ornate boat crosses Lake Ashi past the red torii gate of Hakone Shrine standing in the water, with Mount Fuji presiding over the whole scene when the weather cooperates.

When to go

Every season sells a different Hakone: November maples around the baths, sharp winter air with the best Fuji visibility, spring blossom, and cool green summers above the lowland heat. Fuji hides in cloud more often than postcards admit - winter mornings give the best odds.

Honest expectations

Hakone is popular, polished and priced accordingly - weekend crowds fill the ropeway queues, and a good ryokan night is a splurge worth budgeting honestly. Volcanic activity occasionally closes parts of Owakudani; the loop reroutes without drama. Fuji is a lottery - plan a trip that is lovely even if the mountain sulks, and treat a clear view as the bonus it is. Day trips work, but the dawn bath is the point of staying.
