Feigefossen

Feigefossen, also written Feigumfossen, falls in one long ribbon from a hanging valley high above the eastern shore of the Lustrafjord, a drop of around 218 metres that makes it one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in Norway. It is visible from the road and from the fjord, but the walk up brings you to the foot, where spray fills the air and the noise is considerable in early summer. A marked path leaves from a small car park near the farm at Feigum and climbs about thirty minutes through birch and boulder to a viewing area on the rock. The volume depends entirely on snowmelt: in June it is enormous, by late August often reduced to a thin thread.

When to go

Late May to early July, when snowmelt gives the waterfall its full volume; by late summer it shrinks considerably. Morning light reaches the fall better than afternoon on this side of the fjord.

What to expect

The path is steep in sections, rough underfoot and slippery near the top where spray wets the rock. Parking is a few spaces on a farm road. The fall can be disappointing in a dry August, which is when most visitors come.

Nearby

Urnes stave church is south along the same shore; Skjolden and the Sognefjell road lie at the head of the fjord.
