Khone Phapheng Falls

Where the Mekong spreads into the four thousand islands of Si Phan Don, the river drops through a series of rapids and falls, and Khone Phapheng is the largest of them. It is not tall, but it is extraordinarily wide and carries an enormous volume, and its significance is historical as much as scenic: French colonial engineers wanted the Mekong as a route into China, and these falls made that impossible, which is why they built a short railway across Don Det and Don Khon to portage boats around the obstacle. Rusting locomotive remains and the old bridge survive on the islands. The falls themselves are viewed from platforms, and the sound at high water is the point.

• The main falls viewpoints - platforms over the widest section of the cascade.
• Li Phi falls - a rougher cascade on Don Khon, reached from the island.
• The colonial railway remains - the old portage line, bridge and a locomotive on Don Khon.
• Irrawaddy dolphins - a small, critically endangered population in deep pools nearby.

When to go

August to October, at the end of the wet season, is when the falls are at their most powerful and the noise is overwhelming. November to March is drier and more comfortable to travel, with the falls reduced but still substantial.

Honest expectations

The falls are a viewing platform experience rather than a walk, and the site is developed with a park, restaurants and an entrance fee that some find steep for what it is. Dolphin sightings from Si Phan Don are increasingly unreliable as the population has declined severely; treat any tour promising them with scepticism. Hydropower development on the river is a live issue affecting flows.
