At Amotan five valleys meet, and their rivers arrive in a single deep gorge through a series of waterfalls, which makes it one of the most concentrated pieces of water scenery in Norway. Marked paths from the farm at Jenstad follow both rims with viewpoints over the falls and the confluence far below, and bridges cross at several points. The route is part of a network of old drove roads and farm tracks, including the path to Ansaetra, a preserved summer farm, and connections onward into Trollheimen. Jenstad farm itself has an old flour mill and stands as an example of the mountain farming that shaped the valley. Flow peaks in June and drops through the summer.

What you actually see

  • The confluence - five valleys and their rivers meeting in one gorge.
  • The waterfalls - Linndalsfossen, Reppdalsfossen and others dropping in.
  • The rim paths - marked routes with viewpoints and bridges.
  • Jenstad farm - a preserved mountain farm with an old mill.

When to go

June for maximum water, July to September for the driest paths and best footing; the gorge is at its loudest during snowmelt. Autumn colour along the rims is strong in late September.

Honest expectations

Paths run close to unfenced drops in places and are slippery when wet, so care is needed and it is not ideal for small children. Parking at Jenstad is limited with a small fee. The access road is narrow.

Nearby

Innerdalen lies south in Trollheimen; Sunndalsora and the Driva valley are north.
