Romsdalseggen Ridge

Romsdalseggen has become one of the most walked ridges in Norway, and the standard version takes a shuttle bus from Andalsnes up to Vengedalen, then follows the ridge about ten kilometres back over the tops and down into town, roughly a thousand metres of ascent in total and a descent of about the same. The line of the walk keeps the Trollveggen face and the Romsdalshorn on one side and the Romsdalsfjord and Isfjorden on the other, with a high point at Blanebba and several airy sections where chains are fixed. A shorter alternative starts at Nesaksla, now also served by the Romsdalen gondola, which opened in 2021 and put the lower part of the ridge within reach of anyone.

What you actually see

• The ridge line - a long crest with drops on both sides.
• Trollveggen and Romsdalshorn - the great walls seen across the valley.
• The fjord view - Romsdalsfjord and Isfjorden below the northern side.
• The chained sections - fixed aids on the more exposed steps.

When to go

July to September, when the ridge is clear of snow and the shuttle runs; earlier in summer snow patches make the exposed sections hazardous. Start early, and check the forecast, as the ridge is no place to be in wind or lightning.

Honest expectations

This is a long, demanding day with exposure, scrambling and chains, not a stroll, and people are rescued from it every season. The descent into Andalsnes is steep and hard on knees. Cloud removes the entire point of the walk, and the shuttle runs regardless.
