The Romsdalen gondola opened in 2021 and climbs from Andalsnes to the top of Nesaksla at 708 metres in about five minutes, ending at Eggen, a restaurant with glass walls looking down the Romsdalsfjord and up the valley toward Trollveggen and the Romsdalshorn. It changed the character of the area: what had been a two-hour stone-stair climb for the fit became accessible to everyone, including families and people with limited mobility, and Rampestreken, the steel viewing ramp, is a short walk below the top station. From the summit, the Romsdalseggen ridge route can be joined, and walkers frequently ride up and walk down or the reverse. The base station is a few minutes from the town centre and the railway.

What you actually see

  • The five-minute ascent - a gondola climbing 700 metres from the town.
  • The Eggen restaurant - a glass-walled building at the summit station.
  • Rampestreken - the steel viewing ramp a short walk below.
  • The Romsdalen view - Trollveggen, the Romsdalshorn and the fjord.

When to go

May to September for walking connections and the clearest weather; the gondola runs year-round with weather closures and serves skiers in winter. Cloud on Nesaksla is frequent.

Honest expectations

The ticket is expensive for a five-minute ride, and the restaurant at the top is costly. The gondola brought crowds to Rampestreken, which now queues in summer. Operations stop in high wind.

Nearby

Romsdalseggen and Trollveggen are in the same valley; the Rauma Railway starts in Andalsnes.
