Tamakautoga Beach

Tamakautoga sits on Niue's western coast south of Alofi, a village with a small beach below it and a pool in the reef platform that holds water when the tide drops, used for swimming. The coast here is the usual Niuean arrangement of raised coral with the sea working at it. Sunsets over the water are good and the village is a short drive from the capital. The village holds one of the island's show days, when it opens up for a full day of food, sport and display. Niue has fourteen villages and each takes a turn through the year.

When to go

May to October is the dry season and calmest. Low tide is when the pool is usable. Cyclone season runs November to April.

What to expect

The beach is very small and the pool depends on tide. Coral is sharp and shoes matter. Facilities are minimal.
