The Tautu sea track drops from near Alofi down through coastal forest to the reef on Niue's western side, one of the shorter and easier of the island's sea tracks, coming out on a platform of raised coral with pools in it and the sea beyond. Canoes were landed along this stretch. The western coast is more sheltered than the east and the water is often calm enough to get into. There are more than twenty sea tracks around the island, each belonging to the village whose land it crosses.

What you actually see

  • The short track - one of the easier of the island's sea routes.
  • The coral platform - the raised reef the track comes out on.
  • The pools - the basins in the platform rock.
  • The sheltered coast - the calmer western side of the island.

When to go

May to October is the dry season. The western coast is calmer than the east year round. Cyclone season runs November to April.

Honest expectations

The coral platform is sharp and shoes are essential. Swell makes the edge dangerous. There are no facilities.

Nearby

Alofi is nearby, and Utuko is north.
