Avatele Beach
Niue's main sand beach, on the southwestern coast with a boat ramp beside it.

Avatele on Niue's southwestern coast is the closest the island has to a conventional sand beach, a stretch of coral sand in a bay with a boat ramp at one end and reef offshore, and it is where Niueans swim and launch canoes. Most of Niue's coast is raised coral cliff, so a beach at all is unusual here. The water is clear and the reef starts close in. The village behind is one of the larger on the island and the bay is used for canoe racing at village show days.

When to go
May to October is the dry season and calmest. Swell affects the bay at times. Cyclone season runs November to April.

The beach is small by any standard and gets rearranged by cyclones. Facilities are minimal. Currents outside the reef are strong.
